Reflexions
Metaphysically, the lungs are associated with sadness, grief and the inability to let go, and I have found verrucas and calluses to be common on the chest reflexes of people who have suffered a great sadness in their lives.
Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a large muscle that forms the floor of the thoracic cavity. It functions in inhalation, and produces approximately 60% of oneâs breathing capacity. In its relaxed state, the diaphragm is dome shaped. However, when it contracts it flattens, and this increases the vertical dimension of the thoracic cavity. The dimensions of the thoracic cavity are further increased by the contraction of the external intercostal muscles, which elevate the ribs. As the dimensions of the thoracic cavity increase, the pressure inside the lungs actually decreases. When this pressure becomes less than atmospheric pressure, a partial vacuum is created inside the lungs and this vacuum pulls air into the lungs. This is the process of inhalation/inspiration.
Normal exhalation (expiration) is a passive process that does not involve any muscular contraction. After being stretched during inspiration, the muscles of the lungs and chest contract to their natural state and the volume of the lungs decreases. This increases the pressure within the lungs, and once this pressure is greater than atmospheric pressure, the air will move out of the lungs to the area of lower pressure.
Practical tip
The diaphragm is a key reflex to work in the last trimester of pregnancy if a woman is suffering from fatigue, constipation or fluid retention.
